Bucket List Challenge

This week at Wander Back, we’ve been giving a lot of thought to the idea of a bucket list. It sounds a little morbid, talking about the things we want to do before we die, right?

If you think about it more, though, it actually gives you a list of concrete goals to work toward, to help us feel like we’re doing something to make our lives feel productive. Even if we already work hard, do what we can to help others and to further our careers, there’s still going to be things that we want to experience someday. As we grow older, we gain a lot of responsibilities, and they can become overwhelming, which makes it harder for us to remember what we want to experience, let alone just take a moment to breathe. Focusing on chores, work, paying bills, and the like means that it’s easy to forget to have fun.

Today, then, we want to challenge you to take a break. Just 5-10 minutes. It doesn’t have to be right this moment, but sometime before you go to bed. Take that time to create your bucket list. What are all the things you want to do, the things that are only about happiness, about fun, about relaxing? Forget your responsibilities, just for a few minutes. Get five or six things down, whether it’s an actual list or slips of paper in a jar–it doesn’t matter how, as long as it’s something that makes you happy. Be creative!

Now, this challenge doesn’t end there. Visit your bucket list frequently. Make it a goal to complete each item, whether it’s once a week, once a month, a year, or even a lifetime. It’s important to recharge; we’re not meant to live a life of only work, after all! It’s okay, crucial even, to have fun sometimes and do something different. Whether your list includes simply having a fun day at Tempe Town Lake or saving up for a European travel extravaganza, think of what you want to do to focus on yourself.

Here are some of the items on my bucket list, for reference:

-Don’t work 7 days a week. I’m a self-admitted workaholic, and so I actually have to remind myself to take a day off!

-Go out with friends at least once a month. I can get so focused on wanting to pay off debt and grow my businesses that I forget it’s okay to spend a little money once in a while.

-Disneyland!! Sometime in the next two years, preferably. My son is almost at the age where he can enjoy it, so it’s time to start saving up money to take him to the most magical place on Earth! (It helps that I love it too.)

So today? Tonight?

Take some time to focus on yourself.

You deserve it.
